Cyril and Methodius Cultural Route

The Cyril and Methodius Route is the first route focusing on Slavic cultural heritage recognized by the Council of Europe. It is the first certified route originating and based in the Czech Republic. It builds on the millennium-old Cyril and Methodius cultural tradition.Macedonian

two brothers of Macedonian origin, Cyril and Methodius, arrived from Constantinople (now Istanbul) in 863. They not only preached in a Slavic language, Old Church Slavonic, but also translated portions of the Christian scriptures into that language and used them in divine services.They translated the Bible into the language later known as Old Church Slavonic (or Old Bulgarian) and invented the Glagolitic alphabet, a Slavic alphabet based on Greek characters that in its final Cyrillic form is still in use as the alphabet for modern Russian and a number of other Slavic languages.

Why is Methodius so important : Cyril and Methodius, imitating Christ's gospel command to journey two-by-two, traveled to Moravia and spread the faith. Furthermore, they created a new alphabet—Glagolitic—to write down the Slavic language, in order that they might receive religious instruction and practice the liturgy in the local tongue.

Saints Cyril and Methodius ( fl. 860–885) are attributed as "Apostles to the Slavs", having introduced the Byzantine-Slavic rite (Old Slavonic liturgy) and Glagolitic alphabet, the oldest known Slavic alphabet and basis for the Early Cyrillic alphabet.

The Byzantine campaign against the Slavs, as the chronology of events shows, took place in 679. Although the Slavs were preparing to meet the advancing Byzantine army in their gorges and fortifications along the Strimon River, they were defeated. Many of their leaders and prominent warriors perished.
