In my opinion, this is the greatest game of all time. A brilliant RTS with a highly active player base, beautifully crafted campaigns & scenarios and competitive online multiplayer. There is also a bunch of support with an amazing community and tournaments hosted often that can be a ton of fun to watch & play.If you are only buying one (and this is in the most literal sense) go with AOE 2, the game simply has more content and is more refined. Not a lot of people would say that the 1st game is better than the second; in this case it holds to be true.Age of Empires II, both HD and DE versions, are preferable to Age of Empires IV. The gameplay, mechanics, community, development history and even aesthetics look better. You are also able to emulate the factions of AoEIV with the present AoEII civilizations.

Do people still play Age of Empires 2 : I'm also a fellow RA2 fan and yes, this game is still popular online. But be warned, this is another "old and flawed" game from the same era, specially when it comes to online multiplayer. The more you play it, the more you'll notice it's problems, mostly because of players exploiting these flaws for some easy wins.

Should I buy Age of Empires 2 or 3

It's no secret that Age of Empires 2 is regularly touted as the best of the bunch. The release of Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition was a dream come true for fans of the series. Finally, one of the gold standards of the RTS genre was brought up to par with more contemporary games.

I consider AOE2DE far better than AOE3DE. I won't say you are wrong, just that we have different play styles and preferences. Mostly cause the AoE III has much more different playing style with the home cities and cards. They're not really comparable imo.

The AOE 2 is the best among any age of empires title. The features like ability to garrison and gates with buildings like castle and all make it much better than the AOE 1. In AOE 1 all civs are almost the same but in AOE 2 we have slight differences in terms of unique units and unique tech.
