Age of Empires II, both HD and DE versions, are preferable to Age of Empires IV. The gameplay, mechanics, community, development history and even aesthetics look better. You are also able to emulate the factions of AoEIV with the present AoEII civilizations.A very decent sequel of a great series that builds up on its legacy rather than dramatically changing it. Enjoy eight very different experiences for each playable nation as you go through their most significant historical periods in great detail.The game if you'd never played an AOE previously would be considered very good. However as a long standing player of the series it gets a couple of things quite "wrong" so to speak. The cinematics are great in the cutscenes and storytelling narrative good.

AOE2 has a great content of SP, campaigns wise with good modding community. So you got plenty of official + fanmade campaigns.

Maybe it stems from the fact that the fourth entry in the AoE saga, while looking sparkling and pristine enough to justify its identity as a modern title, doesn't differentiate itself enough from previous entries, even with its new civilizations, features and historical campaigns.

Is Age of Empires 2 still popular : I'm also a fellow RA2 fan and yes, this game is still popular online. But be warned, this is another "old and flawed" game from the same era, specially when it comes to online multiplayer. The more you play it, the more you'll notice it's problems, mostly because of players exploiting these flaws for some easy wins.

2 is the one that basically nailed it and its still very much alive despite how old the game is. It depends a bit on what you're looking for but its probably the best one to get in a general sense, but again it depends on what you look for in an RTS.100 years = 6 hours and 200 years gives you 12 hours playtime . Now you know where you have put all those hours in when the first lazy sleepy empire awakes and kills you totally to the ground after 10 minutes olleeeee next new game please thank you .
