Skyrim shares a significant similarity with Norse and Viking culture. Many of the Nord architecture, art, and general culture is inspired by the Vikings and the ancient Norse people. However, there are elements that are added to the mix to give Nords their own unique identity.This one is fairly obvious, but Skyrim is based on Scandinavia. Scandinavia refers to the region in Northern Europe that consists of Norway, Denmark and Sweden. Falkreath and The Rift in Skyrim is very similar to Swedish scenery with it's deep pine forests and colorful birches.
