This isn't to say they're not good games, but in order to start anew with its own canon separate from the books, CD Projekt Red gave Geralt amnesia at the beginning of the first game. You definitely don't need to. The Witcher 3 does a good job of explaining things. Although in the Witcher 2 you'll see what happened earlier to some of the characters who will appear in The Witcher 3 such as Roche and Phillipa. You'll get to know Triss a little more too.
