Five men have held the rank of General of the Army (five star), George C. Marshall, Douglas MacArthur, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Omar Bradley, and Henry H. Arnold, who later became the only five-star general in the Air Force.The five-star ranks were retired in 1981 on the death of General of the Army Omar Bradley. Nine Americans have been promoted to five-star rank, one of them, Henry H. Arnold, in two services (U.S. Army then later in the U.S. Air Force).

General of the Army Omar Bradley

Omar Bradley (1893-1981) is the last 5-star general, having been promoted in 1950. Bradley was born in Randolph County, Missouri, and graduated in 1915 from West Point alongside Eisenhower. Before WWI, he worked in the War Department for General Marshall.

The highest rank is Generalissimo, which is a 'six-star' rank, superior to the 'five star' General or Field Marshal. It is sometimes given other names: General of the Armies (USA)

Who was the only 5 star general in the Air Force : Hap Arnold

Hap Arnold (1886-1950) was the USAF's only 5-star general, and he served for 42 years. The Wright brothers taught him to fly, and he later commanded the U.S. Army Air Forces in World War II. Gen. Arnold's efforts laid the foundation for modern USAF research and development and other important functions.
