When writing for children, the most fundamental aspect of determining your reader comes down to their age. There's some scope and variation here, because these categories are all largely marketing concepts, but a commonly cited guideline is that Junior Fiction is for readers 5 to 9 years, extending to 12 years.Juvenile Fiction refers to works of children's fiction intended for children (ages 0-11; preschool-grade 6).12-18

YA fiction is aimed at a target audience aged 12-18 (12–14 is the lower end of the YA market and is sometimes categorised as teen fiction). That's not to say older readers don't enjoy YA fiction too – many adults are also avid readers of YA fiction.
