Violence, drug use, and partial nudity are the main reasons. Obviously you are a warrior in the game. Whether you use weapons or magic is irrelevant. Not long and starting the game you see a bang his head cut off, complete with blood.

Is Skyrim ok for a 10 year old : Due to the relatively few sexual themes, I would recommend 11+ for most, but a very mature 9yr old could also play this game. Parents should still occasionally check in on the game to make sure their child is not engaging in weird activities. Minor swearing (“D—n You!”), so if you have an issue with that be mindful.

Why is Skyrim 17+ : It has to be rated M17+ because of obvious legal reasons, but the actual content inside the game barely meets that rating, but when it does, it's extremely mild. I would honestly give it a Teen rating for violence and language. But otherwise, this game will be a lot of fun.
