History. Until the early 19th century, New Quay consisted of a few thatched cottages surrounded by agricultural land, the natural harbour providing a safe mooring for fishing boats and a few small trading vessels. The New Quay Harbour Act was passed in 1835 and a stone pier was constructed at a cost of £7,000.Newquay has been a major tourist destination for more than a century, principally on account of its coastline and nine long and accessible sandy beaches, including Fistral.

Why is Newquay so popular : Newquay is a bustling seaside town, and has earned its place as one of the most popular holiday destinations in the UK for several reasons. Firstly, the surfing! In the 1960s when surfing came to the UK, Newquay really found its feet as a surfing paradise. The laid back surf culture is unavoidable here!

Newquay is known as the surf capital of England and with the incredible beaches here it is no wonder that surfing is the main activity. There are numerous surf schools, surf hire and surf shops on the beaches and in the town to get you kitted out and ready to hit the waves.

They appear only a few times a year when the wind and swell combine to create ideal conditions.Harbour Beach is New Quay's main beach, tucked below the sloping terraces of the village and sheltered from the prevailing weather by the harbour wall. A designated Blue Flag beach, with clean, clear water, a designated safe swimming area and soft, fine sand, Harbour beach is a firm favourite with families.The English spelling of this word was originally key, and that's one way to pronounce it even today, an alternative to "qway." Quay comes from the Old North French cai, "sand bank."
