Should you play The Evil Within before The Evil Within 2 : It's absolutely worth playing through the first game – both to have context for the sequel, and to experience its weird convoluted story. That said, you may or may not want to do it, and that depends on your tolerance to jank. Evil Within 1 is VERY janky.

It's a continuation but to be perfectly blunt, you don't need to play the first if you don't want to. I LOVE the series, but for newbies, starting at TEW 2 is my advice. The game spends quite a lot of time filling you in on what happened in TEW 1 and anything it doesn't fill in, has no bearings on the plot.

If there's one thing the first Evil Within game excels in, it's the terrifying atmosphere. Every location you visit is inexplicably creepier than the last, and I was on my toes every time I had to enter a dark room or turn a tight corner.

Depends on what people would find scary. For the most part it's very much like any other zombie game, but there are a few more "ghostly" encounters which have a bit more of a horror feel to them. Me too. It's got some legit freaky environments and encounters.

Factors like open world, story, etc, don't really impact the game's initial sales since no one knew how that would play out. Reviews for TEW2 are on par with TEW1. But I know a lot of people who were disappointed in 1, and skipped 2.

Is The Evil Within 2 OK for kids : Still not for young kids – several enemy designs are very disturbing, and it's still a game about madness and murder, but Evil Within 2 can be considered less shocking/provocative than the original and offers a more rounded experience.
